Camp Thunderbird Climbing

We had a strong crew from Camp Thunderbird visit us in early July. The camp, located in Minnesota, has been climbing with us every summer for several years now. This year, we had nearly a dozen boys and their counselors, and 27 girls and their counselors, come for two days of classes and a one day Teton climb. Read more . . .

40th Anniversary Party
JHMG celebrated its 40th on June 28, with a guides get together at Andy and Nancy Carson's. Over a hundred guides, family, and friends gathered to meet, eat barbecue, tell tall tales, and view Paul Horton's collection of photos from 1968 to the present. Many of Paul's pictures can be viewed online at his 40th Anniversary Website. Thanks to Andy and Nancy for a great party!!

June 30th Conditions
Early season climbs have gotten underway at the Mountain Guides. With a late spring and an above average snowpack, our climbs in the Tetons and Wind Rivers have encountered plenty of snow at elevations above 9,000 feet. The warm temperatures of the last two weeks of June have helped, with rapid melting currently underway, and river flows through the Snake River Canyon at rates not seen since 1996.

Guide News
Many of our guides have been working in Alaska this spring. Mark Postle, Greg Collins, Tom Torkelson, and Nate Opp have all been guiding groups on Denali and in the Alaska Range in the past month for one of our partners, Alaska Mountaineering School. There has been some success, with summits on Denali via the West Buttress and the West Rib. Jed Workman and Rob Gowler have also been working for AMS.

Grand Teton Guided Ski Descent
Doug Workman successfully guided Simone Blei of Italy on a ski descent of the Grand Teton May 19. They left Corbet High Camp at 3:30 am, and ascended the Stettner and Ford couloirs, reaching the summit in six hours. After waiting for things to soften up a bit, they skied their ascent line in great style. Check out clips and photos on the Mammut website and also on the K2 ski website.

Join us for City Girls
