JHMG Gear Review – Salewa Condor EVO

As we enter our late spring into early summer season here in the Tetons, we begin to look at many of the alpine classics of the range. With many of the alpine rock routes and snow climbs we begin to truly focus on the proper equipment and gear that is needed to move around the Tetons this time of year. One piece of equipment that is truly paramount is footwear. We as guides need to be comfortable and warm when we are on our feet for hours and hours and the new Salewa Condor EVO is certainly the boot of choice for our early summer guiding season. The Condor is an amazing alpine boot that is lightweight, warm and stiff where it counts.

Beyond the concern for footwear we are using many techniques and skills that require crampons and the use of an ice axe. With the Condor EVO, we can use almost any style of crampon including hybrid and strap-on. Where the Condor EVO excels is the perfect pairing with hybrid crampons as the toe and heel welt match well with most brand of crampons on the market. Outside the use of crampons the Condor EVO has a low profile toe and Vibram soles that really let one feel the rock and move through alpine terrain with smaller foot holds.

Again, the Condor EVO is our guide’s footwear of choice for these in between seasons where we move through rock, steep snow and occasional alpine ice. We as guides appreciate the Gore-Tex lining, 3-D lacing system and sticky rubber that all make for a lightweight yet strong package in an alpine boot.
