About Woody Lowder

A native Texan, Woody grew up skiing in Colorado, but it wasn’t until his college years in Boulder where he fell in love with the backcountry. Since then he has skied steep descents in Montana, Alaska, British Columbia, Svalbard, and Chamonix, but the Tetons are where Woody has spent most winters honing his passion for ski mountaineering and alpine climbing. When there’s no more snow to be skied, Woody spends the summer months perfecting his rope skills while climbing in Colorado and the Tetons. Woody is the Director of our Colorado Branch.

Testimonials

  • I have been skiing my entire life from alpine ski racing to fun Heli ski trips in Canada. In all my years (more than 45!) of skiing, this was in the top two for amazing skiing and adventure! Woody's expert knowledge of the park as well as his expertise in guiding/safety made my first big back country ski weekend one of the best. Although there were other groups out there, Woody knew just where to go to provide us with fresh tracks and deep powder for two days. Looking forward to more trips with JHMG!

  • What can I say?? Woody expertly guided me and my 11 year old daughter up and the experience was perfect. He was completely flexible when we needed to change the route and we got to the top. Highly recommended!

  • Michael and Woody are true experts and exceptional teachers. They delivered the course content in an extremely engaging manner and made sure that the overall experience was fun and memorable. It always makes a noticeable difference when you can tell your teachers are well versed in their craft, have put an immense amount of work into making sure their course is both engaging and educational, and care about their students - Michael and Woody did all of those things to the utmost. I couldn't recommend this course more highly to other individuals who are excited to learn how to be a contributing member of a backcountry group and want to learn from top-notch teachers.

  • Woody is an excellent guide! He is very knowledgeable, professional, and patient with me and provided many options for me to get what I wanted out of the climb. I feel much more confident about cleaning trad gear and how to be more efficient with multi-pitch climbing. I'm already planning more guided adventures with JHMG!

  • My guide Woody and The Mountain Guides provided an unforgettable experience for my first multi-pitch climb in the magical Eldorado Canyon. We experienced several
weather related obstacles like snow and high speed winds but Woody was still able to make this experience happen while prioritizing our safety. I'm addicted and can't wait
    to get back out there.

  • My wife and I had a great experience climbing in the Flatirons with The Mountain Guides. Our guide Woody did a terrific job choosing the right objective and communicating with us throughout the process, from pre-trip planning to on-route management. He was also very professional and safety conscious. Finally, he was thoughtful and skilled at taking some awesome pictures to help us document the experience. We highly recommend The Mountain Guides and Woody in particular for climbing in the Flatirons and we look forward to sharing future adventures together.

  • Max and Woody were fantastic! After going through the available options for Longs Peak, and evaluating the routes and conditions, we arrived at going up the Keyhole Ridge! They were not only great guides, but also great coaches and very personable. It made the day not only memorable and fun, but I also learned a great deal, both about climbing and staying safe on the mountain. They made the experience one that I will remember for a long time, and I hope to repeat in the future! I highly recommend The Mountain Guides for any alpine adventure you are planning.
