Itinerary

Day 0 – The evening before the camp, you’ll connect with your guides for a short introduction on zoom where you’ll discuss clothing, equipment, the contents of our backpack, and current snowpack conditions.

Day 1 – You’ll meet your guides at the winter trailhead at a time decided on by your guide. The first day we will establish our group dynamic and refresh the skills necessary for touring including companion avalanche search and rescue, ascending with skins, transitions from up to down, and of course riding

Day 2 will be spent in magnificent GTNP, ascending and descending some of the classic winter lines. Along the way you will be learning about route selection, track setting, snowpack assessment, weather assessment, and skiing in variable backcountry snow. The best part is that you will be learning with other women and non- binary folks while experiencing some of the best touring objectives in the Tetons.

Our AIARE 1 Avalanche courses take advantage of the amazing terrain in the Tetons to help jump start your touring career. We use a hybrid course model to maximize your time in the mountains. The course starts with an online learning module that you gain access to one week prior to course start. Two days before your course starts, you’ll meet with your instructor for an evening of virtual learning using video chat. The course will officially begin in the field where you’ll spend two full day tours traveling through the mountains practicing techniques for managing avalanche hazard.

Grand Teton National Park is located roughly 30 minutes from our Jackson, WY headquarters. Our Jackson office is located in the south part of Jackson at 1325 S. Highway 89, Suite 104 and shares a parking area with Smith’s. Our phone number is (800) 239-7642 or (307) 733-4979. Most trips and classes will meet at this office for gear checks, preparation, and classes. The Jackson Hole airport is the closest, but Idaho Falls (a 2 – 2.5 hour drive) is a cheaper option and Salt Lake City (4 – 5 hour drive) are also air travel options. It is helpful to arrive a couple of days prior to your trip/class in order to acclimatize. Otherwise, you should arrive the day before and stop by our office for an equipment check. Do not plan on traveling the day after a significant climb – you will be tired and there are no guaranteed times when we will return to the trailhead. Plan on having accommodations for the night prior to and the night you return from a significant climb. There are a plethora of hotels, motels, and bed and breakfasts in Jackson and the surrounding area. Accommodations near our office make your transitions convenient. It is highly advisable to make reservations as early as possible. Lodging recommendations and many more details can be found in the downloadable document below.

Testimonials

  • Amazing Back Country Ski day with JHMG. Our Guide knew exactly where to find the best pow! I wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

    — Rob Barton
  • Top notch guide service with enormous experience. I love the educational aspect as well. I always learn a ton.

    — Dirk Friel
  • Words cannot convey the experience of a winter day out with a JHMG guide taking you on a safe tour of the Tetons. Slow and steady up for a few hours rewards you with an exquisite view of the Tetons in all their majesty. Then, instead of an exhausting, bone-jarring hike back down, take the skins off your skis and ride down in powder that is almost impossible to find in a ski resort. Even a week after the last snowfall, you will still find good snow to ride down on. Even if it’s not a clear and sunny day, it’s a wonderful day out and you’ll want to keep going back until you are rewarded with those magnificent views. If the price for a ride on the Virgin Galactic rocket is $200,000, I’d say a day in the Tetons with a JHMG guide is the most undervalued ticket you can buy!

  • JHMG is an amazing organization. They listen to what I want in a trip experience then seek to take it one step bigger & better.

    — Mike Long
  • Professional and friendly crew.  The class was better than I ever expected.   Excellent job at building confidence and knowledge.   I pretty much had the best day ever!

Mountain Hardwear was founded in 1993 by a small band of outdoor industry iconoclasts. They saw the industry changing, compromising quality and dumbing down products to serve less technical users. Mountain Hardwear was founded to buck this trend in order to stay true to the needs of outdoor athletes.
