About Nadav Oakes

Nadav was born and raised in Israel. Prior to moving to the US, he guided climbing, mountaineering, and canyoneering throughout the region. He taught and trained rescue units and military rescue and special ops teams, and he worked and taught  industrial rope access and rigging.
Nadav spent a large portion of his free time during those years exploring new areas for climbing and canyoneering in Jordan, adding yet another region to his guiding repertoire and ultimately writing a guidebook to Moab, Jordan.
Since coming to the US, Nadav has instructed climbing and mountaineering for the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), and he has guided for Alaska Mountaineering School (AMS), Jackson Hole Mountain Guides (JHMG), and Montana Alpine Guides (MAG).
Nadav enjoys doing anything in the vertical realm, from industrial rope access work to scaling granite big walls in Yosemite. Nadav’s personal climbing trips and work have taken him across the globe; he has worked and/or climbed in the Middle East, Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. He is currently based out of Bozeman, Montana, and is available for guiding locally and abroad.

Testimonials

  • This climb was life-changing. It was a true mountaineering experience that offered everything: risk, reward, pain, suffering, conquering fears, and pushing personal limits. Nadav was the best guide I’ve ever had. He was honest, laid back and answered any question we could throw at him. His knowledge about the mountains and the Winds in particular was greatly appreciated. He was an excellent teacher and mentor in the backcountry, but he also showed real interest in getting to know each of us on a personal level. I feel like that is rare trait these days. Over the course of the 5 days, I felt less like a client and more like a friend. On summit day, Nadav was honest and upfront. I never felt like he was babysitting us, but rather truly guiding us. We discussed every section of the climb prior to making any major moves. He never stopped teaching the entire day. He knew just how far to push us while managing the risks and keeping us safe. I feel honored to call Nadav my friend.

  • This was a physically demanding effort, with rough terrain, long days, and some thrilling vertical rock in order to gain the summit.  I feel like I lucked out in having a guide such as Nadav.  His patience, competence, experience, and encouragement through some of the difficult sections were of major value in helping me to get to the top and to return safely.  All of my experiences with JHMG, from reservations, communications before the trip, through on the ground activity during the trip were positive.  The company and the guide rate a 10 in my view!

  • If you want to climb safely with confidence and learn about WHAT you are actually doing and climbing…Pick JHMG.  Hands down the best guys for the job!  YEARS of experience and professionalism are very obvious from the moment you step inside the shop.  Nice guys, well trained and fun to climb with!
