The Motivation of Type II Fun

January 27, 2016 | Posted in: JHMG

It’s pretty much the same every year.  On January 1, I stand in front of the mirror and say: “This year, I am going to get in shape.”

Don’t get me wrong,  it’s a good resolution.  But it’s now January 25th and I have yet to set my master “get in shape” plan in motion.

I am not a gym person.  I don’t belong to one, and even if I did, I doubt I could psych myself up to go.  However, when it comes to climbing, being in good physical condition can often be the difference between Summit or no summit or more importantly Type I and Type II fun.

Type I fun we define as true fun, enjoyment in the moment, while it’s happening.  Type II fun is  fun only in retrospect, but hateful while it’s happening.  I very much prefer Type I fun.  To the point that I will train, get in shape and even GO TO THE GYM to avoid the pain and suffering that goes along with type II fun.

So here is a recommendation:  Get a measurable goal on the calendar. Whether it be a running a marathon, competing in a triathlon, or climbing a mountain.  Have something out there where training can be the difference between Type I and Type II fun.  Then establish a reasonable and realistic training regiment and timeline.  If you decide to make climbing the Grand Teton your goal, we have a training program that will help guide you.

Finally, go train.  And let the fear of the dreaded type II fun motivate you to physical greatness.
